Full body scanners have gotten a lot of attention lately. People have fears and concerns and no one seems to be completely sure of what these full body scanners are doing now or what they could lead to in the future. Here are 5 myths about full body scanners debunked so that you don’t need to worry one second longer.
You Have To Have A Body Scan
Even when you are flying from airports that use body scanners you never have to go through one. You can opt out if you wish but this scan will be replaced by a pat down procedure that is known for being awkward, feeling invasive, and for being a little embarrassing. Most people go with the full body scan because they either do not know their options or because they prefer getting this type of scan to having someone thoroughly pat them down.
A Body Scan Is Basically A Naked Picture Of You
This is not true at all. First of all, faces are blurred. No one can connect the scan image with the identity of the person being scan.
Secondly, the person who sees the actual scan never sees you and the people who are right in front of you helping you face to face never see the scans. Those speaking on behalf of airports using this technology have stated that these days the scans are more like gingerbread cookie cutouts that are only meant to reveal the presence of any suspicious items on a person’s body.
These Images Will Get Onto The Internet
This myth is just fear talking. There are precautions taken to ensure that the images never make it out of the isolated viewing room. Those who work in the room do not bring any bags, cameras, cell phones, or anything like that into the room with them. And the pictures are automatically deleted once they are checked for potential safety threats. They are not saved for any length of time once they have been evaluated for safety purposes.
Body Scans Eliminate Security Concerns
Sadly, this is a myth. There is no technology that can completely eliminate all possibility that there will be problems with security. They are only a measure that is meant to help decrease the chances that someone will be able to board a plane carrying something that could pose a threat to the plane and its passengers.
Forcing Full Body Scans Of Children Is Wrong Or Illegal
This is sure to become a heated issue but these scans are not necessarily illegal. Besides, if you will remember the beginning of this list anyone can opt out of doing the full body scan anyway. While it is right to protect children these scans are easily avoided.
These 5 myths about full body scanners should help you feel more comfortable with them. There are concerns but most of them have been addressed. And if you still don’t like full body scans then you can skip them and get a pat down instead.
